Exploring the Moebius Universe: A Journey into Surreal Sci-Fi Art

Dear friends,

As some of you know, I am a big fan of Jean Giraud aka Moebius.

His work inspires me a lot. And looking back, especially at SPACEBIRTH 2, we made many conscious and unconscious links to his illustrations.

For those who don’t know Moebius – he was a groundbreaking French artist in the world of comics and sci-fi art. His unique style, marked by intricate details and surreal landscapes, transformed the industry. Famous works like "The Incal" and "The Airtight Garage" not only captivated readers but also left an enduring impact on the sci-fi and fantasy genres worldwide.

I collect his comics and especially I try to get as many different copies as possible from ARZACH (image above).

His clothes are always very detailed and a mix of old-fashioned and Sci-Fi. I really love the dress which Malvina is wearing in the image above. You can see the galaxy on it. Isn’t that amazing?

I also do love the simplicity with which he illustrates his characters. I am a big fan of especially this image of the Meta Baron (Above, left). Also the name… Meta Baron. Incredible.

Again about minimalism. I love the reflections in this image. He just drew some small vertical lines, but I can already feel how shiny the stone floor is. No need to speak of this great small car and the helmets of the guards.

Here the people are levitating in the air because they are in the highest stage of the TETA-Dream.

Moebius worked on many projects with Alejandro Jodorowsky. The most famous ones are The Incal and also the Movie DUNE, which sadly never got realised.

Last but not least a video where you can see him drawing with pen and ink. Highly incredible. Also there is a good documentary about him on Youtube.

Like it or not, but now with AI, we can apply the style of Moebius to our own creations.

The video which I did for Len Faki last year was very much inspired by the work of Jean Giraud.

But I also tried to keep an own visual language, so it is not “just an AI video with Moebius-Style”.

Thanks for reading. I hope that was not too long 😀

Much love,
Marius
