The Bagunça
Recife, Olinda, and a small camera in a very big mess
Dear friends,
I’m back in Berlin. And I already miss the Portuguese mountains.
But before I get into all of that, I want to tell you about a book.
Earlier this year I spent some weeks in Brazil and ended up at the Carnaval in Recife and Olinda. I’ve been to many Carnavals, but this one was totally another level.
It’s nothing like Rio. People celebrate in narrow streets, day and night, and the whole thing is one big loud Bagunça.
I had to keep my stuff and my friends close the entire time. Otherwise everything would be lost…
I brought my small Ricoh GR3 with me and shot ninja-style through all the chaos.
One of my best friends, Isadora Cirne, is a walking encyclopedia of Brazilian culture. She took me to places I would never have found alone. Tiny streets, special blocos, the real deal. (Cariri)
Now we are putting together a small book about Olinda. Her writing and my shaky photographs.
That’s that for now.
Much love,
Marius
