How an Airbnb Stay Led Me to a Hidden Cinematic Goldmine

When Netflix Fails: Finding Movie Classics on YouTube

Dear friends,

I love movies and usually enjoy watching them by connecting my laptop to the projector.

However, last weekend we stayed at an Airbnb in Istanbul and couldn’t connect to the television. The only options available were Netflix and YouTube.

I am not a big fan of Netflix. Sitting on a couch and flipping through films like through people on Tinder feels horrible to me.

So I was lucky that I found a playlist of the Criterion film collection on Youtube. Every film on it is worth watching.

For quite some time I had been wanting to watch Bicycle Thieves from 1948, directed by the Italian maestro Vittorio De Sica. So, I was thrilled to stumble over it in the above mentioned list.

It is one of the pillars of neorealism cinema. The key to this film is the tremendous actuality, the honesty and the passionate pleading for human values.

A beautiful film… Can’t wait to watch some more of those golden nuggets…

Much love,
Marius
